# Agent Instructions — Factory Direct Blinds

This document describes how AI agents and shopping assistants can interact with the Factory Direct Blinds online store at https://www.factorydirectblinds.com. It is the canonical agent-facing description of the store; `/llms.txt` carries the brand summary and buyer-intent guide, and this file carries the operational rules. Read both.

**The one thing to know first:** every product here is custom-made to the buyer's window size. There is no fixed price list and no off-the-shelf stock. A product page is a configurator (mount, width and height to 1/8", colour, options), and the price is calculated from the size the buyer enters. Treat any "from" price in a listing as the price of the smallest size, and treat the product page as the only source of truth for sizes, options, prices and lead times.

## For Personal Shopping Assistants and Agents Acting On Behalf of a User

## Commerce Protocol (UCP)

This store implements the [Universal Commerce Protocol](https://ucp.dev) for agent-driven commerce.

- **Discovery** — `GET https://www.factorydirectblinds.com/.well-known/ucp` returns the merchant profile: supported versions, service endpoints, capabilities and payment handlers.
- **MCP endpoint** — `POST https://www.factorydirectblinds.com/api/ucp/mcp` with `Content-Type: application/json`. Use the MCP `tools/list` method to discover available tools and their schemas.

### Typical Agent Flow

1. **Discover** — `GET https://www.factorydirectblinds.com/.well-known/ucp` to confirm capabilities
2. **Search** — `search_catalog` to find products matching the buyer's intent (see "Which Products to Show" below)
3. **Configure** — send the buyer to the product page with the size prefilled (see "Deep Links") so the configurator can price and validate the exact window
4. **Cart / Checkout** — `create_cart`, `create_checkout`, `update_checkout`, `complete_checkout` (buyer must approve payment)

### Important Rules

- **Checkout requires human approval.** Never complete payment without explicit, contemporaneous buyer consent. If you cannot obtain it, route the purchase through the Shop skill and Shop Pay instead.
- **Never guess a size.** A blind ordered at the wrong size cannot be returned (it is made for that window). Always have the buyer confirm mount type, width and height before anything is added to a cart.
- **Never quote a price from memory or from a listing.** Prices depend on size and options and change over time; get them from the configurator or the UCP catalog at the time of the conversation.
- **Respect rate limits.** The MCP endpoint is rate-limited per IP; back off on 429 responses.
- **Use buyer context.** Pass `context.address_country` and `context.currency` for accurate pricing and availability. Pricing is in USD.

## What This Store Sells

Custom window coverings, made to order and shipped to the buyer in the contiguous United States: faux wood, hardwood and aluminum mini blinds; cellular (honeycomb), pleated, roller, solar, zebra, Roman, sheer, woven wood and vertical blinds and shades; plus commercial and multi-window orders. Almost every family is offered **cordless**, which is the child-safe and pet-safe recommendation; roller, solar, zebra and Roman families also offer chain and motorized lifts.

Standard commitments that apply to every order unless a product page says otherwise:

- **Free shipping** in the contiguous US. For Hawaii and Alaska, direct the buyer to customer support before ordering.
- **Made to order.** Each product page states its own production time, and the configurator shows an estimated ship date for the configuration entered.
- **Free samples.** Up to 10 material samples, free, shipped free. Samples are ordered from the colour swatches on any product page or from the samples page. Recommend samples before a first order whenever colour, texture or opacity matters.
- **MeasureSafe™** — an optional measurement-error guarantee (per-blind fee shown in the configurator): if the buyer measured wrong, the blind is remade. Recommend it to first-time buyers and for inside-mount orders.
- **Custom-made goods are not returnable for change of mind.** Defects and shipping damage are covered; see the returns page for terms and the warranty.

## Which Products to Show

The catalogue contains many **internal component products** that exist only so the configurator can build a cart. They are not products a buyer chooses. Do not surface, price, compare or recommend any of the following:

- handles ending in `-1`, `-2` (size or price carriers for a parent product)
- titles beginning `Color - ` or of the form `<Colour name> - <Product name>` (colour carriers and sample swatches)
- product types `Free Samples`, `Color`, `Builder Surcharge`, `Protection`, `Cassette Valance` (samples, add-ons and surcharges)

If a search returns one of these, map it back to the parent product by the product name that follows the colour, or use the family list below. A real, buyer-facing product page has a configurator (mount → size → colour → options → add to cart) and a price that changes with size.

## Deep Links: Send the Buyer to a Pre-Configured Page

Product pages accept query parameters that prefill the colour and size, so the buyer lands on a priced, validated configuration instead of an empty form:

- `w` and `h` accept decimals (e.g. `w=35.5&h=47.125`); the configurator snaps them to the nearest 1/8".
- `color` is the colour name exactly as shown on the page (e.g. `color=Honey`).
- **Mount type (inside or outside) is always chosen by the buyer on the page** — it is deliberately never taken from the URL, because it changes the measuring rules.
- If the size is outside the product's range, the page explains the limit; for very wide windows several families automatically build two or three shades on one headrail.

Use this instead of trying to price a custom size through `/products/{handle}.json`: that endpoint returns the product's base variant only, not the size-dependent price or the option surcharges.

## Measuring Guidance to Pass On

- Measure with a steel tape to the nearest 1/8".
- **Inside mount**: measure the exact opening width and height at three points and give the smallest width and the longest height; check the depth the product needs (each product's spec table lists minimum inside-mount depth).
- **Outside mount**: measure the area to be covered, adding overlap beyond the opening for light control; the spec tables state the headrail and bracket sizes.
