Learn what top down bottom up shades (sometimes abbreviated as TDBU or honeycomb shades) are exactly. Both the bottom and the top of the window can be adjusted for the ideal light control. The windows have different cords attached to rails at both the top and the bottom of the window covering. These cords allow you to adjust each rail independent of the other for total customization.

At Factory Direct Blinds, we especially recommend top down bottom up blinds for the ground floor of homes and apartments. These shades allow you to cover the bottom portion of your window, thus maintaining your privacy, while still letting in light at the top of the window. For this same reason, they are also an excellent choice for bathrooms and other rooms where privacy is key. Just make sure to choose a moisture-resistant material for bathroom blinds.

Top down bottom up shades are also an ideal choice for rooms that get full morning or afternoon sun and thus experience a lot of glare. If you’re not sure which shades you want, Factory Direct Blinds will send up to 10 free samples so you can select the perfect top down bottom up blinds for your home.

FAQs

How to install top down bottom up shades?

First, ensure you have the necessary tools: a measuring tape, a drill, a level, brackets, and screws. Then, decide whether you want to install inside-mount or outside-mount shades. The former is a better option if you want a custom, cleaner look, while the latter gives you more privacy and light control. Once you decide, you should measure your window frame. If you’re installing inside mount shades, measure the window frame depth to ensure the shades will fit. Moreover, check whether your window is square; if it’s not, outside-mount shades are a better option.

How do top down bottom up shades work?

Top-down bottom-up (TDBU) shades feature different cords attached to two rails. The first rail (mounting rail) has its own cord, which you pull if you want to raise the bottom part of the shade. The second rail (floating rail) also features a cord, which you pull to lower the top of the shade. Although there are numerous types of TDBU shades, like cellular honeycomb shades, Roman shades, and blackout shades, they all operate the same way.

Can top down bottom up shades be motorized?

Top-down bottom-up shades are considered one of the most versatile and functional window treatments. Such shades can be motorized for extra convenience or hard-to-reach windows. You can raise or lower motorized top-down bottom-up shades by pushing a button.
