Sheer Shades & Sheer Blinds

What Sheer Shades Are

A sheer shade is two layers of sheer fabric, front and back, with soft fabric vanes suspended between them. When the vanes are open, light passes through the sheers and you see out. When they close, the vanes overlap into a continuous soft panel. Raised, the whole shade stacks compactly at the top of the window for an unobstructed view. They are the softest option in our window shades range.

Common Questions About Sheer Shades & Sheer Blinds

Can people see through sheer shades at night?

It depends on the vanes. With light diffusing sheer shades, closed vanes still show silhouettes once lights are on inside, so they give daytime privacy rather than round-the-clock privacy. Light dimming sheer shades have opaque vanes and give real privacy day or night when closed. With the vanes open, any sheer shade lets you see in after dark, just as you can see out by day.

Are sheer shades the same as zebra shades?

No. A zebra shade is one loop of fabric with alternating sheer and solid bands, and you control light by moving the bands to line up or overlap. A sheer shade has fabric vanes suspended between two sheer layers, and you rotate the vanes to control light. Sheer shades look softer and more layered; zebra shades give a crisper, striped look.

What are sheer shades also called?

Sheer blinds, sheer shadings and sheer horizontal shades are the most common names. Some manufacturers use their own trademarked names for the same construction. Whatever the name, look for the same three things: two sheer layers, soft fabric vanes between them, and vanes that tilt independently of the lift.

How do you clean sheer shades?

Little and often. Lower the shade, open the vanes and dust both faces with a feather duster or a vacuum brush on low suction, about once a month, so dust never builds up between the layers. Spot-clean a mark gently with a damp cloth and mild soap, testing on a hidden area first. Do not soak, scrub or machine-wash a sheer shade – the vanes and sheers are delicate and easily creased.

Can I get cordless sheer shades?

Not on our vane sheer shades, which come with a cord loop or motorized operation. If you want a sheer shade with no cord at all, choose motorized: lift and vane tilt both run from the remote, which is also the right choice in a home with young children. If you want sheer fabric with a cordless lift, the Signature Sheer Light Filtering Roller Shade offers cordless operation up to 96 inches wide.

Do sheer shades block light?

They soften it rather than block it. Light diffusing vanes leave a soft glow in the room even when closed; light dimming vanes darken it significantly but are not blackout. Some light always comes through the sheers and around the edges, especially with an inside mount. For a bedroom that needs real darkness, choose light dimming and layer a blackout shade or drapery behind it.
