These options provide privacy without sacrificing your view, allowing you to control the amount of light entering your space for restful sleep or comfortable living.

What Types of Window Coverings Work for French Doors?

Several types of window coverings work well for French doors, including roller shades, cellular shades, wood blinds, and Roman shades. Each type offers unique benefits for light control, privacy, and style. Consider your specific needs when choosing the best option for your French doors.

Roller shades are a simple and sleek option for French doors, providing a modern look and easy operation. They offer custom opacity for sunlight, full roll up capability, easy customizability, and durability with ease of cleaning.

These window blinds provide the perfect balance, keeping your space private while letting you appreciate the outdoors.

Cellular shades, also known as honeycomb options, are popular for French doors due to their energy efficiency and insulating properties. These coverings provide excellent light control and privacy while also adding a functional layer of insulation to any room.

They offer tight stacking for good view, customizability, insulation features, and durability making them low maintenance.

Wood options are ideal for French doors, offering precise light control and a traditional look. One-inch wood options work particularly well because they fit comfortably between the door and decorative handles. These provide a classic option for French doors with excellent light control capabilities.

Roman shades for windows are available in a wide variety of fabrics and colors, and their flat construction should fit behind the door handles. They offer light filtering properties and ability to be mounted with shallow brackets.

From bold stripes to traditional solids, these options come in a variety of textures and patterns to fit any decor.

Installation Considerations for French Doors

Window coverings for French doors will be mounted on the outside because unlike regular windows, French doors have no depth. It is important the covering you decide on can be mounted on the outside. Most 1" options, roller options, and cellular options will fit behind the handle, assuming there is a 1 inch clearance.

French doors have decorative handles that could interfere with operation. You'll want to choose a covering that is not very deep with an outside mount.

If you plan on regularly raising and lowering your covering, choose cordless blinds to avoid getting cords tangled up on the door handle while also increasing child and pet safety.

When your covering is lowered, it may move when the door is opened and closed. To prevent this, use hold-down brackets to keep the bottom in place.

These are installed on the door to keep the bottom secure. If you plan on leaving the covering down, you should select the hold down brackets when customizing.

Material and Operation Options

Depending on your preference, you may choose from various materials, such as wood, faux wood, aluminum, or vinyl. Each material offers unique benefits, such as durability, affordability, and easy maintenance. Consider your specific needs and budget when selecting materials for your French door coverings.

When it comes to light and privacy control, blackout options offer the ultimate level of privacy and light control. These block out all light, making them ideal for bedrooms, media rooms, or any space where complete darkness is desirable. Light-filtering options allow soft light to come through while providing privacy when needed.

When shopping for French doors, consider materials such as wood, faux wood, vinyl, or fabric, and choose an operation style that suits your needs, such as corded, cordless, or motorized. Cordless options provide a clean, clutter-free look and are ideal for avoiding cords getting tangled on door handles. Motorized options offer convenient operation via remote control, wall switch, or mobile app.

Design and Style Tips

Decorating with French doors is all about striking a balance between functionality and aesthetics while considering your personal style preferences. Try incorporating coverings into your current color scheme with complementary accent palettes to create contrast and patterns to make a focal point. Add interest by introducing rich textures with Roman options, your choice of fabric with cellular options, or hardwood material with wood options.

Coordinate with your existing interior design by choosing minimalist coverings for a sleek, modern look, or more classic options for rustic or traditional design. Customize the size for the perfect fit that works like a glove.

Choose from a variety of colors, patterns, and textures to match your decor. Shutters can also provide an elegant alternative for French doors.
